Th Rize Up! Vol 3 – Swerfk

When did you first pick up a graffiti can/ start painting?

Tagged a bit like most kids when I was younger and then picked it up again later in 2009

Who are your favourite fellow artists, locally and more broadly?

Locally in Canberra I like the character styles of ‘Houl, Abyss,Voir’ and my favourite letters in town usually come from Sly crew… I really dig some of the stuff coming out of Sydney – particularly street artists ‘Bafcat, Slug, Jumbo’. Also have to mention the art scene in Melbourne is home to some of my faves as well ‘gent48, does, meggs’ internationally and probably the best of all would be ‘pose msk, nychos the weird, yok & sheryo’. All of these artists are killing it with style and originality.

Where do you draw your inspiration?

I have been inspired by many individual artists over the years, but more broadly I have always referenced cartoons, comics and toys as that’s where my appreciation for design, colours, scenarios and weird shit has probably originally developed from. I also reference apocalyptic themes and anxiety around devastation in society, but it can be often hard to notice this in my work as I try to intertwine this seamlessly into all the other madness happening with the colours and characters. I also draw inspiration and reference Japanese woodblock prints, as I really enjoy the way a story can be illustrated on a single page almost in a similar way to a ‘where’s wally’ page which also has similar compositional choices, particularly when thinking about front, middle and foreground as well as perspectives ‘usually one point – front to back’ . I haven’t mentioned yet that I really enjoy ‘Ren & Stimpy’.

What’s the scene like in Canberra and has it changed since you began?

The scene in Canberra is kind of weird, but I think the street-art/graff scene is generally weird. Often it seems like you can’t just relax and paint cause it’s such a game of unspoken drain politics and you often don’t know who you are going to offend. Hopefully not? I think of myself as just a regular artist that sometimes experiments with taking a sketch from my book and translate it into a larger wall piece or a link up collab with a friend etc.. cause its just be about fun… ‘ bit of a rant’ … the scene has flourished in the last 5 years or so all over Australia and internationally I believe, and it can also be seen in the recent years in Canberra with lots of stickers, paste ups and characters on the rise in and around the city and north suburbs particularly.

Where at the best places to paint?

My favourite places to paint are abandoned buildings, cause you can concentrate and aim to execute the best possible piece you can, which is my favourite part of painting with spray paint it’s like a little mind challenge…..it’s my ‘mathematicool’ equations ‘wall therapy’.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

I would really like to collab with the ‘Yok and sheryo’ those guys are sweet and I think our stuff would suit. Check out their stuff at theyok.com and www.sheryoart.com.

What did you think of skywhale?

It was pretty dope, lots of boobs and it flew. There should be more sky mammals.

If you could resurrect one, who would it be? Big L, Big Pun, Notorious B.I.G?

Big L, best flow! but biggie is just as good

Have you ever been arrested? Private information

If you could slap one celebrity in the face who would it be?

I would walk into the Jersey shore house and get them all to line up in a row and then I would run in and slap them all with one long swipe!

Which TV/movie character do you relate to?

All of the Seinfeld peeps as a whole

Did you have a favourite ninja turtle?

Michelangelo! cause he loves pizza and is the most relaxed and he has nunchuckas!!

If you knew that this was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?

With my awesome lady Hatso oner, we would steal a fast car and stock up on some crazy intoxicants and head to the sea.

What is on the horizon for yourself in the near future, any cool new things in the pipeline?

Currently I have work on show at ‘EfiftyFive’ as part of a joint exhibition with excellent dude ‘toggles’. The exhibiton is titled ‘Cerebrations’ and is up for the month of June. 55 Elizabeth St, Melbourne Central… As for the rest of 2014 I am just working on some small projects.. New Zine, a animation is in the works and a couple of late year shows to come.
